Three forces are driving this. First, flexible pouches use far less material than rigid containers — a typical doypack weighs about 8 to 12 grams, compared to 200-plus grams for a glass jar. Second, the spouted pouch is genuinely convenient — it stands on the shelf or in the refrigerator door, dispenses cleanly, and collapses as it empties, giving you near-total product evacuation. Pouch materials are typically multilayer laminates: PET for the print surface, aluminum foil or metallized PET for the oxygen barrier, and polyethylene for the inner sealant layer. This layered construction means pouches can match or beat the barrier performance of glass, and they block light completely when a foil layer is included.

The limitations? Pouches do not have the same premium hand-feel as glass. They can look inexpensive if the print quality is low. And mayo inside a clear-window pouch can show oil separation, which looks unappetizing even when the product is perfectly fine. A single-serve format changes the entire business model.
