Confirm the container material and closure before choosing equipment. A foil-lined paper can is a composite package, even if it resembles a metal coffee can. Its closure may be a membrane or a seamed end, depending on the design; appearance alone does not establish which closing machine it needs.
Wet Food and Pet Food Cans: Plan for the Thermal Process
Soups, sauces, meat, fish, and wet pet food require a separate package and process assessment. For a retorted product, the selected aluminum body, internal coating, end, and sealing compound must be suitable for the specified heating and cooling cycle. The headspace and vacuum requirements belong to that validated process; vacuum seaming is not a universal requirement for every wet-food can.
A seamer alone cannot establish room-temperature shelf stability. Plan the downstream treatment and its capacity alongside filling and closing. For products subject to U.S. low-acid canned-food requirements, the scheduled process is specific to the product, container size and type, and processing method, as explained in the FDA’s canned-food process guidance. A change of can size can therefore require a process review as well as mechanical change parts.
Which Type Is Yours? Start with the Product Brief
When comparing types of aluminum cans, use the format name to identify the proposal, then resolve the product requirements. The following questions keep that review focused across beverage, dry-goods, and wet-food applications:
- Is the finished beverage carbonated or still? State the actual product condition, rather than assuming it from a category name such as RTD cocktail or kombucha. For a non-beverage product, identify whether it is a dry powder, granules, or wet food, and describe its filling behavior.
- What will the can experience? Specify the filling conditions, any subsequent treatment, intended shelf life, and whether distribution is refrigerated or at room temperature.
- What has the supplier approved? Request confirmation of the can, end, and coating specification for the formulation and intended use. Confirm minimum order quantities and lead times before committing to a format.
- What output and flexibility do you need? State daily volume, target line speed, batch sizes, and the product or format changes you expect. These determine the changeover and integration requirements worth pricing.
- What evidence is needed before launch? Agree on package trials and acceptance criteria, including seam quality and any pressure or oxygen measurements relevant to the process.
For example, keeping the same sleek format while changing from a sparkling drink to a still drink can leave the shelf appearance almost unchanged. The pressure requirement and filling setup still need review. Keeping the same shape while changing a recipe may also require renewed coating qualification.
Ends and Lids Are Their Own Product
A can body and its end are separate components. The drinking opening is only one feature of the end: the profile used by the seaming chuck and rolls also matters. A stay-on-tab opening, a larger aperture, and a reclosable package should not be treated as interchangeable closing arrangements.
Supplier end families can differ even when they share a nominal size designation. Confirm the approved body-and-end combination and its tooling requirements. A different end family may require new tooling and validation; the extent depends on the actual specification.
For an overview of opening designs, see Crown’s beverage end information. For dimensional terminology, use our guide to can sizes and industry codes. Carry the current drawings into the equipment discussion rather than relying on code names alone.
What Changing Formats Actually Costs
Ask for changeover costs by component rather than accepting a promise that the machine handles multiple sizes. A height change within the equipment’s approved range may involve lift settings and guide adjustments. A different body diameter can require handling parts, while a different end size or family can require a new chuck, rolls, or other tooling. The exact scope depends on the machine and the approved can-and-end drawings.
Request the parts list, changeover procedure, expected downtime, and trial requirements for each proposed format. Keeping a compatible end specification across several heights may simplify a beverage range, but it does not remove the need to qualify every package. Include filling, conveying, labeling, and any downstream treatment in the review; a seamer changeover is only one part of a line changeover.
Threaded aluminum bottles and membrane-closed containers also need their own closure assessment. Capping, membrane sealing, and double seaming are different operations, rather than interchangeable settings on a beverage can seamer.
Coordinate Can Selection with the Line Builder
Can supply and equipment supply are two responsibilities that need to meet in your plant, whether you purchase through separate companies or one provider. Keep their approvals connected:
- With the can supplier: confirm the can body and end drawings, end family, coating qualification, and limits relevant to your product and processing conditions. Agree on decoration, minimum order quantity, lead time, and the supply of sample cans and ends.
- With the equipment supplier: confirm handling and closing compatibility, product feeding and filling requirements, target output, and any required pressurization or oxygen-control integration. Define utilities, change parts, cleaning requirements, and acceptance tests using your actual product and packaging.
Do not infer process capability from a machine’s can-diameter range. Fitting the container is one part of the decision; running the beverage under the required conditions is another. Ask for a quotation covering the agreed formats and process steps once the package is defined. A smaller operation may start with individual machines; an integrated line needs agreed interfaces and balanced capacity from filling and seaming through labeling, coding, and any required thermal treatment. Output alone does not decide which arrangement is suitable.
How to Check the Package Before Production
The classic diagnostic question is whether a problem comes from the machine or the cans. Incoming dents or damaged flanges can affect closing, while a well-formed empty can still needs the correct machine setup. Check those issues separately during the trial:
- Inspect incoming cans and ends. Check for damage and confirm that the supplied components match the approved references.
- Evaluate the seam. Use the can and end supplier’s seam specifications, with inspection methods and frequency appropriate to the production process. Appearance alone is insufficient.
- Verify the relevant package performance. Use seam teardown and dimensional checks alongside the relevant pressure or leak tests. For nitrogen-flushed products, agree on residual-oxygen sampling; for retorted products, assess package integrity through the specified thermal cycle. These checks and product compatibility testing answer different questions. A single oxygen reading cannot establish that every seam is sound or prove the intended shelf life.
Record the accepted can, end, coating, and process together. That gives future changes a defined starting point: a new recipe or new end can trigger a focused review rather than an assumption that an unchanged silhouette means an unchanged package.
Plan Your Line by Process Domain, Not by Can Size
Once the package has been defined, group your products by the operations they require. Here, a process domain means a group that can use a compatible filling, atmosphere-control, closing, and downstream treatment setup. Can diameter and height remain important constraints, but matching those dimensions alone does not establish that one line can run two different products.
Process capability to assess | Question for the line builder |
|---|---|---|
| Carbonated beverages | Filling that controls foam and carbonation loss, followed by compatible end placement and seaming. | What output and fill performance can you demonstrate at our product temperature and carbonation? |
| Still beverages | The approved filling process and, where required, nitrogen dosing coordinated with closing. | How will you control the dose and fill-to-seam timing, and verify package pressure? |
| Dry goods and powders | Product-appropriate filling, clean sealing surfaces, and any specified vacuum or nitrogen-flush step. | How will you verify fill accuracy and residual oxygen on our actual product? |
| Wet food and pet food | Product-appropriate filling and closing, integrated with the validated preservation process. | How will line capacity and package integrity be checked against our required thermal process? |
For a co-packer or a brand with several product families, flexibility comes from identifying which operations can genuinely be shared. A common approved end family across beverage formats may reduce tooling changes. Switching from a carbonated drink to still coffee, however, can change the filling, gas-management, cleaning, and preservation requirements even when the can looks identical. List future products in the equipment brief and have the supplier identify what is shared, what needs change parts, and what requires a separate module or line.
Vacuum, nitrogen flushing, and liquid nitrogen dosing should therefore be specified as distinct capabilities with defined package limits. Induction sealing is a different closure process and should only enter the plan if a proposed container and closure require it; it is not an upgrade that makes a double-seam line compatible with every package.
The counter-case is a single-product plant running one proven format at consistently high volume. A dedicated line may be the better investment when it reduces complexity and avoids unnecessary changeover features. Compare the cost of flexibility with expected batch frequency, downtime, cleaning, utilities, and the cost of qualifying additional products.
A useful RFQ describes the process before the dimensions: for example, “still beverage, approved nitrogen-dosed package, specified end family, target output, and defined storage conditions,” followed by the current can and end drawings. That gives the line builder a concrete basis for discussing equipment and future changes.
