What Is the Size of a Soda Can? Ounces and Dimensions

How Many Ounces in a Can of Soda?
A regular US soda can commonly holds 12 US fl oz. A mini can often holds 7.5 US fl oz, approximately 222 mL; Coca-Cola’s US mini-can range is one current example. A 16 US fl oz can holds approximately 473 mL. These are package sizes, not a requirement that every brand use the same serving.
For a portion comparison, the mini contains five-eighths as much drink as the regular 12 oz can: 37.5% less. That does not mean its height or width is 37.5% smaller. The container designer can change either dimension, and the base and opening still need room. Compare fluid ounces for the amount of soda and physical measurements for the space the package occupies.
When buying a multipack, distinguish the number of cans from the capacity of each one. “12 pack” means twelve containers; it does not mean each contains twelve ounces. Twelve mini cans at 7.5 US fl oz contain 90 US fl oz in total, while twelve regular 12 oz cans contain 144 US fl oz. For a useful price comparison, check the volume per can and the total drink volume. For storage, check the individual can profile and the outer pack dimensions separately. The can count alone answers neither question.
Here, fl oz means fluid ounces—a measure of volume, not weight. One US fluid ounce is about 29.57 mL, so 12 US fl oz is approximately 354.88 mL, usually labeled 355 mL. Imperial fluid ounces are different; specify US fl oz when comparing American can labels with metric packs.
Outside the US, 330 mL and 375 mL formats are also available. A 330 mL can is not simply another label for a 355 mL can: it holds less drink and may have a different height or profile. Check the package sold in your target market instead of assuming “standard” means the same thing everywhere.
The difference between 330 and 355 mL is 25 mL, about 0.85 US fl oz. A 375 mL pack is approximately 12.7 US fl oz. These conversions help when comparing an imported soda with a familiar local pack, but they cannot tell you which shelf opening or insulated sleeve it will fit. Keep the original label units alongside any conversion.
The labeled fill volume also differs from the container’s total internal capacity. A filled can retains headspace above the drink, while its external dimensions include the formed base, neck, and closure. Calculating a cylinder’s volume from outside measurements will therefore not reproduce the labeled drink volume.

Other beverage-can capacities include 8.4, 19.2, and 24 US fl oz—approximately 248, 568, and 710 mL by conversion. A 250 mL pack is also often described as 8.4 oz after rounding. Availability and dimensions depend on the product and market; these capacities do not define a single height or diameter. What Is a Standard Soda Can Size in Inches?
The standard-profile row is the useful starting point for a familiar US can. Read its dimensions as height × body diameter, not height × lid diameter. If an accessory lists measurements in centimeters, divide millimeters by ten: 122 mm becomes 12.2 cm and 66 mm becomes 6.6 cm. This avoids confusing a can about 6.6 cm wide with one 6.6 inches tall.
For engineering purchases, a catalogue code is another identifier rather than a substitute for these measurements. Detailed aluminum can dimensions and end specifications belong with the supplier’s drawings; a quick soda-size comparison only needs the capacity, profile, height, and body width.
Are All 12 oz Soda Cans the Same Size?
No. A standard can and a sleek can can both hold 12 US fl oz while having noticeably different proportions. In the table’s examples, the sleek format is about 34 mm taller and 8 mm narrower. The longer body accommodates the drink in a smaller cross-section, so a taller silhouette does not necessarily mean a larger portion.

This matters when replacing a familiar soda with a different brand or package style. A narrow can may sit loosely in a rigid holder made for a wider body. Conversely, a standard can may not enter an opening made for a sleek format. In a shallow refrigerator shelf or a lidded storage box, the taller can’s height may be the limiting dimension even though its width fits easily.
Mini, standard, slim, and sleek also describe different things. “Mini” emphasizes a smaller amount of drink; “standard,” “slim,” and “sleek” describe format families. Do not assume every small can has the same width, or that every slender can is a 12 oz pack. Read the capacity before comparing the outline, then use the maker’s format name when requesting a matching accessory or container.
Minor differences within a profile are another reason to check the actual sample. Manufacturer designs, rounded figures, and measurement stages can differ. A value listed to one decimal place is less precise than a drawing with a tolerance, but extra decimal places alone do not make a website more reliable. First establish what was measured and which can it describes.
How to Measure a Soda Can for Fit
For a holder, shelf, or carton, use an undamaged finished can like the one you intend to store. A ruler is enough for a rough height check; calipers make diameter comparisons easier. Keep a short record of your soda can measurements so you do not later mix a body width from one format with a height from another.
What to measure and record
- Overall height
Stand the can upright on a flat surface and measure vertically to its highest point. Include the rim; measuring only the straight sidewall understates the space a closed can needs.
- Body diameter
Measure across the widest body section, away from the narrowed top and base. Use light caliper pressure so the thin wall is not compressed. Keep the jaws square across the can rather than at an angle.
- The accessory’s usable opening
Check internal clearance rather than exterior dimensions. A holder’s wall thickness, retaining ring, or tapered entrance can reduce the opening. Allow space to insert and remove the can without forcing it.
- Identification and units
Record the brand or supplier, labeled capacity, profile, and whether the sample is filled and closed. Write “mm” or “in” beside every value instead of relying on an unlabeled pair of numbers.
For several cans stored together, check the arrangement as well as one container. Three 66 mm bodies placed side by side already span 198 mm before adding gaps, dividers, or carton walls. A box described as 200 mm wide externally may therefore be unsuitable. For a gravity-fed rack, check the channel and exit opening too; a can fitting the first opening does not establish that it can move through the rack.
Compare like with like when a drawing disagrees with your ruler. Some manufacturer specifications give the flanged height of an empty can before its end is seamed on. A finished-can measurement uses different reference geometry. Neither should be silently substituted for the other. For a tight or repeated fit, check more than one sample and obtain the specified tolerance from the supplier.
Measuring for a Label or Wrap
Circumference is useful for an initial wrap-width estimate: multiply body diameter by π. A 66 mm body has a circumference of approximately 207 mm, or 8.16 inches. A strip of paper wrapped level around the body can help check that estimate without confusing the smaller top diameter with the wider labeling surface.
That measurement is not a print-ready label size. The usable label height normally excludes the curved shoulder and base transitions; the width must account for the intended overlap or gap. Direct printing, adhesive labels, and shrink sleeves also use different artwork requirements. Obtain the template for the actual can and decoration method before approving the design.
The useful result is a clearly identified pack: capacity, profile, body diameter, and height, with the correct reference points. That information answers most size and fit questions without turning a familiar soda can into a code-reading exercise.
