That choice affects handling, especially for products that may spill or shift, but both designs must form an acceptable seam for the specified can and end.

Manual, Semi-Automatic, and Automatic Can Sealers

The main difference between these types is how cans are loaded and moved through the sealing cycle. It is not a universal speed rating: actual output depends on the model, container format, operator tasks, and other equipment in the line.

Choose an Automation Level

Type

How it operates

Typical fit

Check before buying

Manual can sealer

An operator positions the can and operates the seaming mechanism by hand.

Trials, occasional use, and small batches.

Operator effort, compatible can sizes, tooling, and seam inspection method.

Semi-automatic

An operator loads the can or end; the machine powers the seaming cycle.

Small production runs and frequent format changes.

Sustained output with manual loading and changeover requirements.

Automatic

Cans are fed and seamed as part of an automated process.

Higher-volume or integrated packaging lines.

Output at the specified can size, line balance, footprint, and maintenance.

A manual can sealer still needs the correct chuck and rolls for its container. A powered tabletop machine is not necessarily manual simply because an operator loads each can. When comparing rated speeds, request a run using your can, end, and product, and measure the sustained output of the whole process.

Which Cans Can a Sealer Close?

Compatibility is determined by the can mouth and end as well as the body material. Metal cans are common, and some machines are configured for paper-composite or plastic-bodied cans with suitable ends. A machine’s advertised material range does not mean one set of tooling works for every container. Confirm the body and end specifications, diameter, height, chuck, rolls, and any change parts with the supplier.

Double seaming should also be distinguished from induction sealing, which bonds a foil liner beneath a cap. The two methods use different closures and equipment. If the package has a screw cap or another non-seamed closure, describe that closure to the supplier before choosing a machine.

Sealed food cans. Image source: Unsplash.

How to Choose a Can Sealing Machine

Start with the package and product, then determine the machine configuration. These checks provide a useful specification for a supplier discussion:

Information to confirm with a supplier

Can and end: Send drawings or samples, including body material, end type, diameter, and height.

Required output: State the target cans per hour and available production hours; ask for a sustained sample-run result.

Product and process: Identify whether the product is dry, liquid, carbonated, or sensitive to oxygen, and whether a validated process follows sealing.

Format changes: Ask which chucks, rolls, guides, or settings change between can sizes.

Acceptance checks: Agree on sample cans, seam specifications, inspection records, and operator training.

Vacuum or nitrogen flushing may be useful where a product’s packaging specification calls for atmosphere control. The required residual-oxygen level must be established for that product and verified under the intended running conditions; there is no single target that fits every can. For foods requiring a scheduled preservation process, a hermetic seam or low-oxygen headspace alone does not establish shelf stability. Confirm container compatibility and the processing requirements with the relevant qualified specialists.

How Is Seam Quality Checked?

Visual defects such as false seams, droops, sharp seams, or damaged ends can indicate a closure problem. A trained inspector may also conduct a seam teardown and assess cover hook, body hook, seam thickness, width, overlap, and tightness against the specifications supplied for the can and end. Measurements alone do not establish that a seam is acceptable. The FDA closure guide explains the need for visual and teardown evaluation; Industrial Physics’s seam inspection FAQ illustrates common measurements and defects.

Set inspection frequency and corrective actions for the product, process, and applicable requirements. If an unacceptable seam is found, identify the affected production, investigate the can and machine conditions, and follow the site’s documented disposition procedure. Do not assume that one check per batch is sufficient or that a suspect can can be made safe by running it through the seamer again.

For machine specifications and available configurations, see Levapack’s can sealing machine range.

Find a seamer for your can and product

Send us your can and end specifications, product type, and required output.
